Finding Relief in Community: Jim’s Story

Jim Schellenberg, together with his SCSS driver, Wanda and SCSS Coordinator, Sylvia – celebrating successfully completing treatment.

For many facing a serious health diagnosis, the medical tests are only one part of the challenge. Often, the logistical hurdles—like transportation to specialized facilities—can be even more overwhelming than the treatment itself.

One local resident recently shared his experience with this exact struggle. After being told he would need to travel from his home to the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg every day for 36 consecutive working days, the weight of the commute began to set in.

“That scared me more than any of the tests that I was going to be subjected to,” Jim recalled.

While searching for options, he and his family discovered Southeast Cancer Support Services. As a relatively new organization in the region, they were looking for ways to bridge the gap for patients in need of reliable transportation.

The impact was immediate. The organization provided a dedicated driver to take him to his appointments and bring him back home, allowing him to focus entirely on his health and recovery.

The benefit wasn’t just about the ride; it was about the peace of mind. By removing the stress of navigating traffic, finding parking, and managing daily travel, Southeast Cancer Support Services provided a “great weight off our shoulders.”

This story serves as a powerful reminder of how community-driven services can turn a daunting medical journey into a manageable one, ensuring that no one has to face their recovery alone.
