For many, retirement is a time to relax and enjoy the fruits of their labor. But for Ken Zacharias, a retiree from Kleefeld, Manitoba, it was an opportunity to find a new sense of purpose. In a heartfelt video, Ken shares his experience as a volunteer driver for Southeast Cancer Support Services (SCSS), an organization that provides essential support to those facing a cancer diagnosis. Ken’s journey began with a simple radio advertisement. “I heard they were looking for volunteer drivers,” he recalls. “It was an opportunity I felt I could do now that I’m in retirement, and certainly a good purpose and something I could enjoy.”
As a volunteer driver, Ken does more than just transport patients to and from their appointments. He provides a listening ear and a compassionate presence. “The most rewarding experience as a driver with SCSS is communicating with people who have a real need in their life as they’re going through their journey with cancer,” he explains. Ken’s personal experience with cancer adds a layer of empathy to his interactions. “Both my mother and stepmother had cancer, so it was something very relevant that I have experienced in our life as a family,” he says. This shared experience allows him to connect with patients on a deeper level, offering them a sense of understanding and support.
Ken emphasizes the importance of genuine care in his role. “I find that very quickly they can determine if I really do care for them,” he says. “And I think that’s essential, that we show that we care for them as individuals.” By being a supportive and compassionate presence, Ken helps patients feel seen and heard during a challenging time. For Ken, volunteering with SCSS has been a rewarding experience. “What I was looking forward to for retirement was to serve in an area that really had a real purpose,” he shares. “And driving with SCSS gave that purpose.”
If you’re looking for a way to give back to your community and find a sense of purpose, consider volunteering with Southeast Cancer Support Services. As Ken’s story shows, even a small act of kindness can make a big difference in the lives of others.
