Naturopathic Medicine in Cancer

Article provided by Dr. Erin Esau, BA, Naturopathic Doctor

Naturopathic oncology (cancer care) is all about meeting the person where they are at to help facilitate the best outcomes. It is an individualized, root cause approach to both fighting, and recovering from cancer. It is safe alongside conventional treatments like chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery.

  • The Naturopathic Doctor will prescribe evidence informed treatments that includes some combination of natural substances (vitamins, minerals, amino acids, etc), diet/lifestyle changes, acupuncture and IV (intravenous) therapy.  The plan will be tailored to your goals.
  • The Naturopathic Doctor is familiar with which natural treatments can be combined with the various mainstream/ conventional treatments to ensure safety and efficacy.
  • During active cancer, one role of naturopathic medicine is supportive, meaning that we do everything we can to make the body strong enough to get through chemotherapy and radiation. For example, some chemotherapeutics tank blood cells- so then we want to be sure to use herbs that can help stimulate the white blood cell production and make sure the next chemotherapy isn’t canceled due to low counts.
  • Naturopathic medicine can provide many improved outcomes both with quality of life and success of treatment.
  • Naturopathic care aims to improve quality of life in terminal cancer cases.
  • In remission there is a lot of work to still do to make your body as anti-cancer as possible, and reduce the chance of re-occurrence. We work with our patients in remission to optimize their health and remove the barriers to health and work on the modifiable factors that contributed to cancer in the first place.
  • Customized nutrient intravenous infusions (IVs) facilitate using high doses of customized nutrient blends at a guaranteed 100% absorption.
