Finding Purpose in Retirement: Ken Nedohin’s Story

For many, retirement is a time to slow down, but for Ken Nedohin, it was an opportunity to start something new. As a volunteer driver for Southeast Cancer Support Services, Ken has turned his post-career years into a lifeline for those navigating one of life’s toughest challenges. After retiring, Ken found himself looking for a way to stay active and engaged with his community. When he discovered the transportation program offered by Southeast Cancer Support Services, he knew he had found the right fit. “I like people,” Ken says with a smile. “I like talking to people no matter who they are.” This natural affinity for connection made the role of a volunteer driver a perfect match for his personality.

While the primary goal is to get cancer patients to and from their appointments safely, Ken views his role as something much deeper. For many patients, the drive is a time of high stress. By taking the wheel, Ken removes the burden of navigating traffic and finding parking, allowing the patient to focus entirely on their health and recovery.

But the service doesn’t stop at the car door. Ken provides a positive presence, a listening ear and peace of mind.  “They don’t have to worry about driving,” Ken explains. “All they have to worry about is getting there and getting back safe.”

Ken’s experience has been so rewarding that he now encourages others to join the cause. For those with a little extra time and a desire to help, becoming a volunteer driver offers a unique way to give back. “If you are someone that would like to be a volunteer driver… I would encourage you to do so,” Ken says.
