Finding Strength in Community: Romie’s Journey with Cancer Connect

For many, a cancer diagnosis feels like being cast into an unfamiliar world overnight. When Romie was diagnosed with leukemia at the beginning of 2025, she found herself facing more than just physical symptoms—she was grappling with the overwhelming weight of anxiety.

“Our mind automatically goes negative,” Romie shares. “And we just can’t sit there.”

Romie’s search for a way to process her experience led her to Cancer Connect, a support group hosted by Southeast Cancer Support Services. While every member of the group may be facing a different type of cancer, Romie found that the emotional landscape they navigate is remarkably similar.

“The benefit of a group is that… not everybody is going through the same thing,” she explains. “But because the cancers are all different, however, we’re all going through the same journey. We’re all in it together.”

Support groups like Cancer Connect and Caregiver & Family Support provide a vital space for patients and their loved ones to:

  • Reduce Isolation: Connecting with others who “just get it” without explanation.

  • Manage Anxiety: Sharing coping mechanisms for the mental toll of a diagnosis.

  • Find Resources: Discovering local care options and navigating the healthcare system.

If you or a loved one are navigating a cancer diagnosis, you don’t have to do it alone. Support is available right here in our community. Learn more about our Cancer Connect and Caregiver & Family Support Groups a www.secancersupport.ca.

As Romie reminds us, there is strength in numbers. Whether you are a patient or a caregiver, there is a seat at the table for you.
