Looking for Volunteer Drivers and Community Coordinators!

Southeast Cancer Support Services is gearing up to open their office and operations in September. SCSS is a community based, not-for-profit charitable organization providing resources, support education and hope for cancer patients and families in 88 communities throughout the southeastern region of Manitoba.

The first phase will be focused on providing transportation services to patients to enable them to get to their treatments and appointments in a safe and comfortable manner. Volunteer drivers from across the region are needed to offer these services. Drivers do their best to make a client’s ride to treatment one less thing they have to worry about, allowing them the space to focus and handle their journey in their own way.

We are looking for Volunteer Drivers who:

  • Enjoy meeting people, display empathy, compassion, and have good driving skills, reliability and well developed interpersonal skills and enjoy giving back to the community;
  • Are over 21 years of age, have a good driving record, be familiar with maps and logistics, and be flexible to adapt to variations during appointments.

Volunteer Drivers may choose their times and locations suitable for them. They will receive a mileage fee to cover the costs of gas, and vehicle wear; parking fees and incidentals are covered by SCSS.

Also looking for Community Volunteer Coordinators! These volunteers will assist cancer patients and their families by confirming drivers available for them to contact for transportation needs. The client’s names are provided to you, with their treatment schedule, and the coordinator locates a driver in their region who may be able assist them; the driver and the patient then communicate to arrange the driving details. The Coordinator may also assist with identifying people in the area as potential drivers and provide those names to the SCSS Office. Coordinators also enjoy working with people and contribute to the community.

“These are essential services for cancer patients, and the first step required to begin their journey of hope once the cancer diagnosis is received,” says Heather Jowett, Board Chair.” It is always a significant shock and cancer resonates within every family. Southeast Cancer Support Services is proud to help navigate the support each patient needs to make their journey less stressful. It’s all about community helping community.”

Applications for Drivers and Co-ordinators are available by contacting info@secancersupport.ca or calling 204-326-8571. An office will be opening soon, and a website will be launched for more information.
