The Cost of Cancer

According to a report released by the Canadian Cancer Society this week, cancer costs the average patient nearly $33,000 including out-of-pocket expenses and lost income during treatment and recovery. In fact, it is estimated that about 20% of the costs involved in cancer treatment fall directly on the patient and their caregiver – totaling a staggering $7.5 billion dollars in 2024! Patients who live in rural and remote communities feel this impact even more acutely due to the increased travel costs to access treatment. Financial constraints can contribute to worse health outcomes, with some opting to delay or forgo aspects of their treatment.
